How to Hire a Shopify Expert: A Founder's Screening Playbook

Decide what you are actually buying

Founders often ask for a redesign when the real need is conversion work, or ask for a new theme when the real need is faster product pages and better email flows. Before contacting anyone, write one sentence describing the business outcome you want in 90 days.

That sentence changes who you should hire. Launching a first store is a build project. Flat sales on healthy traffic is a CRO project. Good traffic and poor repeat purchase is an email and retention project.

Screening questions that separate operators from decorators

Ask these on the first call and listen for specifics, not adjectives.

  • Show me two live Shopify stores you built and tell me what changed commercially after launch.
  • Which theme would you start from for my category and why?
  • How do you handle mobile speed and Core Web Vitals?
  • What Liquid, HTML or CSS work are you comfortable doing without an app?
  • What do you need from me, and what happens if I am slow to deliver it?
  • What is out of scope, and how are extra requests priced?
A strong candidate will interview you back: margins, AOV, traffic sources, returns rate, and who the customer actually is.

Freelancer, agency, or Shopify Partner

A specialist freelancer gives you direct access to the person doing the work, faster iteration and lower cost, which suits stores under roughly seven figures. An agency gives you redundancy and broader teams, at a higher price and usually with an account manager between you and the maker.

Neither is inherently better. What matters is that the person touching your theme has shipped stores in your category and can explain their decisions in commercial terms.

What a real scope document contains

Vague scopes are where projects die. Before payment, you should have a document naming every page to be designed, every integration, the number of revision rounds, the content you must supply, the launch date, and what happens after launch.

  • Page list: home, collection, product, cart, about, contact, policy pages, landing pages.
  • Integrations: reviews, email platform, analytics, payment methods, shipping app.
  • Content responsibilities: who writes copy, who supplies product photography.
  • Revisions: how many rounds, and what counts as a new request.
  • Handover: theme documentation, a walkthrough recording, and post-launch support window.

Realistic pricing in 2026

A focused, high-quality Shopify build with a strong product page template and a handful of pages typically starts around $500. A complete store with custom sections, full merchandising and integrations sits near $1200. Design plus ongoing growth work, including email flows and ad creative, is $2000 and up.

Prices far below these usually mean a template dropped in with your logo and no conversion thinking. Prices far above should come with strategy, research and measurable performance commitments.

Red flags worth walking away from

No questions about your customer or your numbers. No live store URLs. Refusal to work in your Shopify admin with a collaborator account. Promises of guaranteed rankings or guaranteed conversion rates. Full payment upfront with no milestones. Communication that goes quiet for days during a paid sprint.

How to run the project once you have hired

Set a weekly 20-minute check-in, keep feedback in one written thread rather than scattered messages, and consolidate revision notes into a single list per round. Projects overrun far more often because of scattered client feedback than because of slow developers.

Agree the success metric before the build starts: conversion rate, add-to-cart rate, mobile speed score, or email revenue share. Then measure it 30 days after launch.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire a Shopify expert?

A focused build typically starts around $500, a complete store build sits near $1200, and design combined with ongoing marketing work is usually $2000 and up. Complexity, integrations and content needs move these numbers.

How long does a Shopify store build take?

A focused build runs one to two weeks. A full custom store with integrations and content usually takes three to five weeks, largely depending on how fast the brand supplies copy and photography.

Should I hire a Shopify expert or use a template?

Templates are fine for validating an idea. Once you are spending on traffic, the cost of a poorly converting page quickly exceeds the cost of hiring someone who optimizes it properly.
